Etymologisch ist zu erkennen, dass der Begriff „flanieren“ für ein zielloses Umhergehen steht.1 Daher ist naheliegend, dass der Typus Flaneur in der Literatur von seinem früheren Ebenbild, dem Wanderer, abgeleitet wurde, der die Natur durchstreifte und, an dem, was once er dort beobachtete, seinen Gedanken und Gefühle artikulierte.
Den Eingang in die Literatur fand er schließlich mit Edgar Allan Poes Erzählung „The guy of the group“ von 1838. Seitdem sah sich der beobachtende Mensch in einer städtischen Welt, die geprägt battle durch stete Veränderung und rasanter Entwicklung im Alltag, der Industrie und vielen anderen Bereichen.
